Downtown Springfield Y Youth Aquatic Lessons

The YMCA Youth Swim Program is a nationally recognized program for children ages 6 through 13 years. Children progress through several different levels of classes as they learn new skills and improve their strokes. Instructors teach skills that help children learn personal growth, pool safety, stroke development, water sports and rescue skills.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONS Ages 6-13
The Springfield YMCA has taken the guess work out of choosing a swim level for your child. You pick a day and time that is convenient for you and your family, and we will do the rest. Swim classes on the first day of the session will be extended by 15 minutes to allow for swim testing of every swimmer to be certain that they are placed in the appropriate level. Classes will meet for 45 minutes for 7 weeks.

Polliwog – Beginner I
For first time swimmers or a child who may have some fear of the water. Children will become acquainted with the pool, floating and basic paddle stroke, swimming on their side and back.

Guppy – Intermediate I
Swimmers are introduced to the front crawl, sidestroke and backstroke. Class will also work on treading water and rotary breathing.

Minnow – Intermediate II
An intermediate swim class for those who possess basic front crawl and backstroke and can tread water. Swimmers will work to increase endurance by swimming lengths of the pool.

Fish, Flying Fish, Shark (Advanced I, II, & III)
Swimmers are introduced to breaststroke and continue to improve techniques for strokes learned in previous classes. Increased focus on endurance through lap swimming and will work on refining their strokes and building endurance.

Porpoise (Advanced IV)
Swimmers continue to improve upon the four competitive strokes – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
Class will also introduce competitive starts and turns.

Competitive Swim Pre-Team Ages 4-18
Learn the skills necessary for success on a swim team. This program will help develop those skills necessary for success on a competitive swim team. Class will focus on the 4 competitive strokes with work on starts, turns and stroke technique. Program will meet once per week for 45 minutes.

Saturdays 12:30 – 1:15 PM

Stroke and Turn Clinic Ages 5-18
This program works on the skills necessary for continued success on a competitive swim team. This program will focus on the skills and techniques needed for competitive swimming. Clinic will focus on the 4 competitive strokes including extensive work on turns, starts and stroke technique. Program will meet 2 times a per week, for 45 minutes.
Ages 5–10 Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30–6:15PM
Ages 11–14 Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30–7:15PM
Ages 15–18 Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:25-8:10PM

Family Swim Lessons
This program works on the skills necessary for continued success on a competitive swim team. This program will focus on the skills and techniques needed for competitive swimming. Clinic will focus on the 4 competitive strokes including extensive work on turns, starts and stroke technique. Program will meet 2 times a per week, for 45 minutes.
